The illustrations in this book took my breath away. They are simply stunning. The story is a sweet and quiet tale, and the powerful illustrations give the book a perfect balance. Any child that has been lost, even if it is for a moment, will be able to relate to Baby Bear's journey home.

I completely heart the illustrations of Kadir Nelson. His animals are luminous, the color palette richly hued, the scenery is imaginative and vibrant. This simple story takes the reader on a journey to find the way home. Loved this book.

I was a little surprised by how engaged 3, 4, 5 year old listeners were with this book. The illustrations are luminous, the story keeps kids guessing about what animal will be next and how will the baby bear find its way home.

Absolutely stunning. I love the use of light and shade in the illustrations, they are luminescent. The text is soft and gentle.

Beautiful, rich illustrations really compliment the quiet, thoughtful story. Having recently come from reading [b:Owl Babies|716944|Owl Babies|Martin Waddell|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1347772278s/716944.jpg|2961469], I found the looming sense of anxiety and uncertainty very poignant and I was really struck by the fact that when Baby Bear finally finds his home, he isn't reunited with his family. So much of Nelson's work is so beautifully infused with African American culture and experience; though it's style is dramatically different from [b:Mama Miti: Wangari Maathai and the Trees of Kenya|6520754|Mama Miti Wangari Maathai and the Trees of Kenya|Donna Jo Napoli|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348289097s/6520754.jpg|6712633] which I recently picked up (I think Baby Bear resembles perhaps more closely [b:Nelson Mandela|13623795|Nelson Mandela|Kadir Nelson|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1352757020s/13623795.jpg|19227542] in the vibrancy of the illustrations) I wonder if Baby Bear perhaps flows in the same vein, given its careful balance of isolation and serenity.

Beautiful illustrations-which is to be expected of Nelson. The illustrations are sometimes too dark though-fitting for the nighttime the story takes place, but at times hard to make everything out clearly-baby bear is almost lost in the picture of the rocks. I was also unsure about the text. Why did all the animals know baby bear? Why was the frog busy? Why did the owl say I love you? And some of the advice was so random. The text just didn't flow well for me. I also kept thinking baby bear would find his mom-he is a baby after all, so I was a bit let down in the end I think when he's still alone. Where were mom and dad bear?

Great pictures but lacking in story.

Baby Bear written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson is the story about a baby bear who is lost late at night in a forest. He asks multiple animals for help and directions along his journey, but no one gives him direct advice. Instead, they give him vague advice about finding his way back home. An example is when the moose tells Baby Bear that when he is lost he sits still and listens to his heart. Baby Bear is thankful for the advice even though none of it is really useful. He finally comes in contact with a salmon who leads him home. I believe that Nelson’s goal with this book is to teach kids that even when you want something or to get somewhere so badly, sometimes you have to slow down and enjoy the journey.

[a: Kadir Nelson|21345|Kadir Nelson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1302410239p2/21345.jpg]'s illustrations are breathtaking! Baby Bear is trying to find his way home with the help of some woodland creatures. All are truly magnificent!

Beautiful illustrations, but the story/message were a little strangely conveyed to me, but maybe kids like it?
