The Ordinary Princess

M.M. Kaye

4.19 AVERAGE

Princess Amethyst is the seventh princess and the most lovely baby of her sisters. At her naming ceremony, she receives many wonderful gifts from the fairies, until the Fairy Crustacea tops it off by gifting her with being ordinary. It doesn't take long for Amethyst beautiful hair to become mousy brown and freckles to appear on her nose. Now deemed Amy because that name suits an ordinary princess more than Amethyst, Amy grows up freer than her older sisters. Soon all her sisters are married off and the search for Amy's prince begins. None of the suitors want to marry her after seeing she lacks beauty, even those the princes aren't quite catches either. Amy ends up running away to live in the forest, becomes a kitchen maid at the castle of a neighboring kingdom, and finds true love.

I loved this book as a kid. I read it over and over, and created my own sort of fan fiction around the novel. I tried reading this a few years ago as an adult but couldn't get into it. I tried again, apparently in the right mood because I finished it, and remembered the thoughts and feelings I had as a child.

Upper elementary school/middle school.

I love this book!

Very cute, definitely worth the read. Kept reminding me of Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede, although this is for a younger audience.

I loved this book as a child, and whilst I could probably be critical of it now, it was just really nice to re-read.

I honestly just read this a couple of times a year to feel childhood magic. this is, to me, the best fairy tale of them all, and I adore very literally everything about it. Perry and Amy are my OTP. 😉

A young adult chapter book, a really fun twist! Great modern retelling of a fairy tale to read to young girls. A fun read aloud

I am reading this to Emma while William reads Eli a knight book. It has a couple pen and ink pictures, but she does not often have the attention span for a chapter book. Part one put her to sleep nicely.

Emma fell off, but I felt like I should finish it. It was cute, but nothing I will review on goodreads.
