I really liked the topic and the writing, but I wanted more. I think I would’ve loved to read through the end of the season and really delve deeper into the relations of the characters. More so the ending was very abrupt. I know what the author was trying to leave us with but as an ending it felt a bit incomplete.

"They wouldn't expect a perfect game from a man, but that's what they'll expect from you. Can you be perfect?"
Good to see the double standard has been totally eliminated since the 40s.

It's sweet and fast, it has that overly researched feel of a work of fiction written by a journalist who got very excited about a specific detail, it works to let you join conversations with people who care a lot about high school football. Wonderful that this could be written when the primary sources just weren't there for a worthy biography.
As a young girl who sat in the high school football stands with her dad learning about the game and the joys and tears of being a sports fan, this book hit my heart in a special way. Based on a true story. Texas high school football. A really good read!

More like a 3.5! I liked the story, though I do wish I got to hear about how the rest of the season went. But I think the writing was very unsophisticated, like the author just needed a better editor. The characters except Miss Tyler lacked depth, and the storytelling was more “and then, and then”, rather than a beautiful journey. But I enjoyed learning about football, feminism, and how a war affects people.
