You know those goosebumps you get when the coach gives the big inspirational speech in a Disney sports movie? That's what this book did for me. A perfect blend of A League of Their Own and Remember the Titans
I love the idea of this... it's based on a true story about a woman who learned football at her daddy's knee and becomes a high school football coach during WW2, when the team would otherwise have been unable to play due to lack of an available male coach. What an inspiring story!
But... the book didn't come together the way I had hoped. The writing felt choppy. The timeline lurched around a bit, and a lot of characters were introduced then left undeveloped. When the book ended, I kept flipping through the final pages, thinking there surely must be an epilogue... it was just abrupt and unsatisfying.
I'm thankful to this author, though, for introducing me to a woman who must have been an incredible lady.

I asked my mom if I could borrow a book and this is the one she handed me (she loves historical fiction). I ended up really loving this book because who doesn’t love a story about a strong, resilient lady?!
Hoopla audio. A perfectly cute, saccharine, forgettable novel set in small town Texas in the 1940s. There are no more men left to coach football... enter heroine. Clearly there are many layers here, overall an entertaining little book.
Very simplistic, almost amateurish, writing. However, that said, I prefer simple prose as opposed to more lyrical, poetic prose. But also, this book only earned three stars because it started slow and only piqued my interest when it became obvious that the female protag would break the glass ceiling in the WWII-era Texas high school football coaching hierarchy. Fortunately, the book is only 212 pages long, so, it was a quick read and didn't take up a lot of my time.
Quick read, but very fascinating story as it was based on a true story. I was left wanting to know more, such as how did the rest of the season go. Regardless, good story that I would recommend!

What a good story; this is how you’re supposed to write about sports!! Fast-paced, engaging, sufficiently technical but not-quite-only about sports.
And this is how historical novels should be written! Inspirational, yet true (no senseless re-contextualizing a story to fit today’s ideals, but through characters that you can understand while still acknowledging they developed in a different society).

It’s football season and I’m a sucker for football books. This was a football book! That’s… all. It was a light Labor Day read with a completely average and predictable plot that was unassuming and harmless. On the verge of hopeful and inspiring it falls about 2 yards short of good to me.

So y’all know after “Remember The Titans” was released and the market was flooded with a million feel good Coach/high school sports stories. This one of those. I’d watch it once on Disney and keep going with my life.

Good, quick read. I absolutely adored the relationship between her and her dad. Growing up loving football. I had the same with my dad, and I miss him so much.
