The last quarter of the book felt rushed and unbelievable. If you want the best, just read The Power of the Dog / The Cartel.

Gripping, fast paced and sexy but like, also.....mad annoying sometimes. I will be reading the prequel though.

I wasn't thrilled with the writing style. It felt like it was trying way too hard to be cool. As for the story itself, I liked it. I saw the movie and I have to say the ending of the book is better. The movie seemed to cut all the extraneous plots and streamlined everything so that it focused more on the action, which was nice, but I liked getting all the background info on the characters in the book.

It's a little overly-stylized, and there are sections that are a bit on the nose politically speaking. However, once the actions starts happening it really picks up. A very satisfying conclusion too.

I went up to four from 3.5. The author is writing about very violent people and occurrences but it's almost poetic. Sparse and sometimes beautiful. I don't think this is for everyone but it was a fun, fast read and I enjoyed it.

This is a re-read because I was on vacation and
wanted to guarantee I would read something
I (previously) loved.
Don Winslow cannot write a bad book -- or at
least I haven't read one I did not give at
least four stars to.
The prose in this one is a bit different but
I got used to it and I loved, loved, loved
the characters.
A bit disappointing in the ending but perhaps
there was no other way to end it.

Great writing, great characters, great plot. I would call it a 21st Century Butch Cassidy crossed with Traffic combined with James Ellroy and some of the best pop culture humor this side of Nick Hornby thrown in for good measure.
