You don't have to have CPTSD to learn and grow from this book. This was recommended in a Divorce group I am in and it was so interesting and helpful from a healing perspective. As a queer and mixed-race person, there were lots of notes in this book that rang true for me--generational trauma, the long term effects of microaggressions, the effects of COVID and the current political climate--as well as the difficult goal of changing learned behaviors and reactions. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to overcome trauma of any kind. There is hope and there are a LOT of roads to healing.

This was really rough to get through and ended up with me crying along with Stephanie Foo. We had different situations, but the reactions are nearly the same. She says that she was reduced to nothing but stimulus and reactions, and she didn’t know where the trauma stopped and where her personality began, and I felt that.

I loved listening to the audiobook, and was happily surprised to hear the recordings of her and her therapist! It was such a raw, lovely moment.

Stephanie Foo does an exquisite job weaving her personal story with research and profound revelations about life and the importance of human relationships. She has been able to catalogue her hurt while leaving room for wonder, hope, and even humor. I cannot recommend this book enough.

The first 20% was rough, and I almost DNF. So glad I pushed through as it turned out to be a beautiful and moving story.
