The first two hours of this ten hour audiobook is full memoir, recounting the author’s devastating childhood with physically and verbally abusive parents who both abandoned her before her junior year of high school. This is incredibly hard to read, and that’s coming from someone who reads memoirs frequently with varying degrees of trauma. Normally this type of information is recounted over more pages and with more reflection or reprieves, but the author included her memoir just to add context to the rest of the book which makes sense.

The next parts are about the author’s journey with learning about C-PTSD and various therapy methods in processing the trauma. It’s very interesting to go on the journey in real time with someone as they try different methods and their advances and set-backs. The rest of the book read quite quickly to me, as the author learns to live with her complex-PTSD and what she does with the knowledge.

It’s a very interesting read, but very difficult to read. It’s heavy and intense and feels kind of like you’re dragged through mud throughout, but I’m glad I read it. It’s well written and covers a lot of ground. The author narrates the audiobook and does a great job, and she actually included some recordings from a therapy session that are particularly interesting.

I reread many of these pages because I wanted the words to be engraved into my brain

She is from Malaysia! Hearing her words in Cantonese, Manglish/Singlish… beautiful and is a slice of home. Similar culture and upbringing, and similar in age to myself. Beautifully researched, and despite the heavy topic, a wonderfully easy read. Brilliant storyteller, and throughout she strives to be fair in describing her experiences without giving out blame. Truly expertly crafted.

I don’t tend to rate memoirs but I would highly recommend this harrowing and empowering memoir about the authors diagnosis of complex PTSD. We follow her journey from her incredibly abusive childhood (both mentally and physically) with her parents, her struggles to cope with her mental health, and eventually her diagnosis and understanding of how to live with it.

Aside from the psychological discussions looking at her behaviour and coping mechanisms, it was fascinating how her early trauma had an impact on her physically, and how generational trauma from her Malaysian family fed into it. Overall this was a brilliant read, and I would recommend the audio which was not only narrated by the author, but included some audio transcripts from sessions with her therapist.

Wow.
I listened to this memoir as an audiobook which I think k added a lot when it came to her impressions and getting to actually hear recordings from her therapy sessions!
What a powerful story of perseverance, I’m so grateful she had the courage to share her life with the world. I learned a lot about a lot of different things from CPTSD to radio journalism.
Recommended for college age and up, maybe high school seniors? Content warning for child abuse and everything that entails.

I loved this one; It's definetly a lot more hopeful than The Body Keeps The Score!
(As with most trauma books though, give yourself a break from reading if stuff starts to feel heavy!)

On my second read!
