O my gosh, this was the best ending for an amazing series. I’m shocked and absolutely blown away by this story and the epilogue!

Lily has been missing for a long time, disappearing in Chase and Lee’s story. We don’t know what happened to her, other then Chase hires a PI to find her. At the end of Jax’s book, Mason let’s Chase know he found her….but Lily and Mason’s story begins before Mason let’s Chase know where she was…

Lily is such a broken character, and her story with addiction and how she pulled herself together for her son was inspiring. She’s such a strong mom, doing whatever she needs to to protect her baby. At first, I thought her leaving Sugarlake was selfish, and not going back when she found out she was pregnant, but once she goes go back, I understood right away why she was afraid to go home, and I think she was right in her decision to run to Arizona.

Mason is exactly the man that Lily and baby Chase deserve. He’s strong, sexy, a protector for them, but he’s broken too, after years of being trapped in a miserable home. When he was younger, his life takes an unexpected turn, so he walks away, just leaving it all behind.
But as always, the past has a way of catching up to our favorites!

O my goodness, the chemistry between these two is hot hot hot, and lord have mercy, it’s steamy! But I love that Mason understands what Lily needs after so many years of trauma, and he’s willing to be that for her.
As we see Mason and Baby Chase’s relationship develop, I was sold on Mason. If a man can treat a little boy he hasn’t known very long like his own, he’s a good man.

There’s so much happening in this story, but everything happened for a reason, and in the end, that epilogue was everything!

I highly recommend this series, they’re all such different stories of real life struggles and so well written!

Well, here are my main comments on this one.
- I realized that I am definitely NOT into reading about rape fantasies. Good to know.
- This FMC was so immature and petty. She was angry about her best friend and brother getting together TWELVE years prior. A couple who is together to this day. I was actually laughing at how angry she was about it. Like, get over it. You disappeared over a decade ago. Life goes on without you hun. Everyone forgives her so easily for doing horrible things and she’s so petty and unforgiving for a lot less. Everyone is always apologizing to her when she was the absolute worst to them. Not saying she doesn’t have a right to be messed up given her past but the way others are so forgiving while she’s not was just obnoxious.

Anyway, definitely my least favorite of the series. But I still liked it. I just really enjoyed the others better. It was overall a very good series. Definitely glad I gave this author another chance after despising Hooked.

McIntire wraps up the Sugarlake series in a fantastic way with Beneath the Surface.
Lily’s story intrigued from the very first hint in book one, and while I was sobbing my way through Chase & Alina’s story, my mind was all over the place, trying to solve the mystery of the sister.
This was such a great way to close out our time in this tiny Tennessee town, and while I’ll miss it, I’m very anxious to see where else the author takes us.

I've waited the entire series for Lily's story, and it did not disappoint! Her personal journey and the romance between her and Mason is everything I wanted it to be. Lily is flawed, broken, and misunderstood, but more importantly, she's a survivor.

She's been through so much in her young life, and she's made a lot of wrong turns along the way. Lucky for me, my favorite stories are the complicated and complex ones where the hero and/or heroine aren't perfect. They make bad decisions, lose their way, do shitty things, and we get to see them change and pull themselves out of their messes.

I don't want a boring character that never makes mistakes. Give me the train wrecks, the morally gray, and the emotionally scarred. That makes an interesting story!

It was easy to be angry at Lily in previous books, but I knew there was more going on with her than we knew. I was happy to finally see the entire picture, and I loved watching Lily find her happiness and heal. She had so much trauma from an early age. Despite finally having a family that loved and protected her, she wasn't able to move on from it. Unfortunately, nobody noticed until it was too late.

I loved Mason right from the start. He was everything Lily needed and deserved. Don't get me wrong, Mason isn't perfect. He makes a lot of mistakes, but through it all, I knew Lily had his heart. I was one hundred percent sure he would do right by her, and that he was exactly what she needed.

Beneath the Surface is a beautiful story, not only about love, but family, friendship, pain, healing, loss, and personal growth. It wrapped the series up nicely. I couldn't have asked for more.

Contemporary romance fans, this one's for you!

Beneath the Surface by Emily McIntire is a hidden identity romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster. This is the fourth book in the Sugarlake series and can be read as a standalone. However, the stories are interconnected so I would highly recommend reading them in order.

I love Emily's books. She does an amazing job pulling me into the story. I loved the relationship that bloomed between Lily and Mason. I really enjoyed getting both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

Blake and Cecily did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.
