This was so emotional, on many levels. The healing that takes place throughout this book & even this series so wonderful to see.

I’m glad Lily got a happy ending after all she endured.

The Best One of the Series

She was right telling you not to look up the Trigger warnings, and I'm glad I did not, because I would not have read it. Which would have been a shame, because it was the best book of the series.

I swear I needed a cool down period after the emotional beating this book gave me. Emily McIntire you never cease to amaze me with each of these Sugarlake Books. Lily and Mason’s story was something for the ages. We have two people who are extremely broken, and hiding from real life. Then they find solace in each other. I am beyond giddy with words anytime someone tells me they have Emily’s series on their TBR List. It’s time to move this series off the TBR List and on to the Read shelf. Even though this book can be read as a standalone I highly suggest starting from the beginning to paint a better picture.

What a powerful end to an outstanding series! Emily McIntire has created some amazing characters in her Sugarlake Series, and in this book, their stories all came together with a satisfying and touching conclusion.
Lily went through the unspeakable as a child, and I’m so glad she found her way back into the fold of her loving family. I actually haven’t come across a backstory like Mason’s (or the mess he found himself in with his father), and that is so rare and refreshing to an avid reader like me. While he may not have picked the best way or time to insert himself into Lily’s life, it turned out to be the very best thing for him, Lily, and Baby Chase. I loved their love, and I’m so glad I found this series and this author!

Beneath the Surface was a book I was marking the drop date for in my calendar, and let me say that doesn't happen a lot with me. I'm the kind of person who only reads series that are already completed because the anticipation of waiting is too much LOL. I found Emily on Instagram reels and didn't check to see if the series was completed before reading the first one. (Thank god I didn't) Immediately, Chase and Alina's love & Emily's masterful writing had me starstruck. Three books consumed in 48 hours later and I was READY for number four. To my complete distraught GoodReads informed me it was not out yet and I had to wait FIVE WHOLE DAYS. And that's how we got here, finishing the whole book on release day because I have zero self-control :)

The teasers of Lily in the previous books had me skeptical at first not gonna lie. This didn't really sound like a story I would normally go for, and to be honest I didn't really like Lily! I hated what she did to Alina and especially what she did to Chase, but I was of course completely wrong. I love Emily's writing & characters so much that I knew she would change my mind, but I did not expect to be THAT wrong. Lily blossomed into this person I was suddenly rooting for and Mason was just... everything I could've hoped for and more. Their story was so beautiful and raw, but so refreshing at the same time. It had me on the edge of my seat, crying, smiling, laughing, everything. The Sugarlake series is full of gorgeous stories and Beneath the Surface is just another great example of that.

I've done reviews for every book in the Sugarlake series, and every time I've put my favorite quotes in my review. But listen, this book was crazy emotional and hard to read at times and I was so invested that I didn't even stop to copy any quotes. I KNOW. I REGRET EVERYTHING. I'm gonna have to do a re-read soon and edit this because I am depriving everyone of Emily's gorgeous writing.

This book was so bittersweet because it was the end of this magical series that I loved so dearly. I'm so sad these characters' stories are completed but, I'm writing this review a couple of months after finishing the book and Emily now has another book out called Hooked & another on the way called Be Still My Heart. (I truly don't know how she can write so fast by the way) So we who are obsessed with Emilys books will be satiated and hopefully, the land of Sugarlake will get some attention again in the future. (Really though I need more haha)

ALSO PLEASE READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING THIS BOOK LOVES! <3
