The final confrontation has cemented itself as one of my favorite scenes ever. Begs the question what if Marvel quips were good. If I wrote a debut novel this sick I’d never shut up about it.

I recently decided that in order to keep my Goodreads account clean, I only wanted to have books that I write reviews for on my "Read" list. Since then I've written a review of each book I've finished, but I'm coming back and adding this one retroactively.
The Lies of Locke Lamora was so damn good. I try to be pretty discerning with my ratings, and to get 5 stars I really need to feel like a book is going to stick with me. And this was one of those rare instances when I finished a book and immediately thought "I will be waiting for release day for every single entry in this series." The plot: so much twisted fun. The characters: rich, witty, flawed but brilliant. The setting: gritty, detailed and real.
It's hard to write a review for a book I read several months ago, but suffice it to say that I have been recommending it to anyone who will listen ever since.

Fresh and original fantasy! Criminal protagonists who stay despicable! Venetian feeling world! I adored this novel, it was an absolute pleasure to read, and really changes the scale of the fantasy genre. It was a contained plot with all the intrigue of an epic fantasy without the enormity of the world.
Tonally and plot wise this was very different from the fantasy I've read before, which made the Lies of Locke Lamora one of the best fantasy works I've experienced in recent years.
