I'm not sure this would count as an entire book - more of a short story - but it was too great not to list! What a fabulous story of either madness in the midst of respectable endeavor or a story of the only sane response to a career and lifetime of the endless petty grind of respectable endeavor. Also an attempt at charitable understanding and compassion in the face of what seems incomprehensible behavior.

What if everyone said "I would prefer not to" in response to soul-sucking "fabulous new initiatives," "great new programs" and all the tired, petty drivel people are exposed to in the modern workplace? How long would it take for the entire system of work to collapse and reinvent itself?

Funny, well-written, didn't outstay its welcome - can't think of much else I'd want from a short story

My favourite read of 2022. Witty and warm. Writing at its very best.

A classic because of its simplicity. Many meanings can be drawn from it to fit many purposes.

You never know what is going on inside someone else’s head
Why shouldn’t we prefer to rebel against the rat race
Are compassion and guilt too closely linked to really be distinguished

I could let you know my interpretation - but “I’d prefer not to”.

Very much enjoying Melville’s prose. The speaker in this story very much believes himself to be a “capital G”Good person, which, aside from the base suppositions he makes regarding his employees and his overall profession, it very much seems that he tries to be.

The depiction of Bartleby himself from this context is incredibly charitable, yet his end remains predictably sad.

My favorite line: “But thus it often is, that the constant friction of illiberal minds wears at last the best resolves of the more generous.”
