Take a photo of a barcode or cover
I would prefer not to.

i wrote a paper on this in high school and remembered today that i never actually read it, only sparknoted it. i can now officially say that bartleby is incredibly autistic

i now actively have to stop myself from saying “i would prefer not to” to everything asked of me. this book stunned me into deep thought, into a deeper curiosity to know more about Bartleby and to just deeply think about this book for days because in some aspects, he perfectly embodies the cycle of life and the importance of our humanity/humaneness during this cycle. this is not a book i would have ordinarily picked up nor even expected to be a 5-star read but i’m glad to say this one’s going to be staying with me for a while.

"Nothing so aggravates an earnest person as a passive resistance."
There's a LOT in this to read into. The lawyer-boss - is he generous, selfish, or both? Bartleby - why are you refusing, sorry, *preferring* not to work? No one is outright abusing you. The employer isnt mean or cruel, in fact he's willing to take you on as a charity. The other employees will work, but we'll ignore their personal vices. But are they vices or a way to just get through the day?
The antagonist of the story is within the subtitle of the story, "A Story of Wall Street," and it's as silent in the story as Bartleby. The cruel monotony of The System and how it is accepted as normal. And Bartleby resists with a quiet, offensive resistance that (to me) says, "I would rather die than partake in this soul-crushing cubicle and gluttony of capitalism."
