Kort, absurd och underhållande novell om Bartleby, mannen som genom sin passivitet lät omständigheterna diktera sitt öde.

Bartleby is a new recruit into a Wall Street lawyer's firm and starts of quiet and hard-working before eventually doing less and less while saying "I prefer not to" and nothing much else. The passive non-compliance is bewildering to everyone, reader included, and the quiet obstinance leads to people around him taking quite drastic actions while he remains immovable.

Wait, I actually liked a Herman Melville work? Color me absolutely shocked. I've read it three times now (well, it is a short novella) and each time I stumble upon something new. At first look, it seemed rather straight-forward, but with each reread I saw how layered it actually was. Surprising how a story about a man who simply preferred not to do anything could be so eventful. Anyone looking for a quick but satisfying read should pick this up.

No expectations but a beautiful little story. Never forget that Melville's prose is certainly among the best of his era. There are all sorts of readings here - this is Melville so of course, we have a queer reading available, and more generally a psychoanalytic one. Bartleby is a Kafkan parable - that is - not Kafkaesque, but adhering to Kafkan framing, his love for incongruity sunk into congruity, thereby neutralising the congruous. Perhaps.
It's a good time.
