What a fun listen. This is the first Sherlock Holmes novel and it is most enjoyable despite the unfair slurs against Mormons and its very Victorian sexism. Stephen Fry is a fabulous narrator and also provides a very interesting prologue.
Now that I have completed The Complete Sherlock Holmes, I have fallen in love with the Neurotic sleuth all over again! I read a few of the stories when I was around 8 and it certainly jumpstarted my imagination for crime fiction. I continued my love for Sherlock by watching tv shows, my favourite being The hound of the Baskervilles - I watched this as a teen and it was the Hammer Horror version that featured the great Peter Cushing.
Sir Arthurs writing in style is flawless and I consider him to be one of the greats. The way in which he wrote Sherlock always fascinated me - the way Sherlock's brain seemed to travel at 100 mph and pick up minute details that everyone around him, Watson included would miss completely. The stories really did come alive for me.

For a long time, before Sauron and Morgoth even... Prof Moriarty was my favorite villian.
Phenomenal, Sherlock Holmes of 221b Baker Street will go down as one of my favourite fictional characters ever written.

I absolutely and completely love Sherlock Holmes. I have been reading and re-reading these stories since the fifth grade and I recommend them to everyone.
I can see why Arthur Conan Doyle's characters of Sherlock Holmes and his friend and sidekick Dr. Watson have been favorites for readers over the years. I finally broke down and began reading these stories and found them very well written and enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised to see in many cases, while the mystery takes place in England, there was often a connection to America. Story connections included the early Mormons, the early KKK and mention of the American gold fields and coal mining communities. And, I was surprised to learn of Sherlock's brother Mycroft, who was a genius in his own right.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the best characters of all time in literature. What a personality!
Mr. Arthur Conan Doyle's work stands the test of time and has inspired a lot of writers ever since he created the peculiar yet beloved detective. It is a shame he never realised how big of a genius he was. Much like Sherlock himself.
