Really resonated with me in a lot of ways. Probably not as good as Homegoing , but I'm mostly just in awe at how completely it different it was while still being really dang good. The only fault I have for it
Wish I could more adequately put into words how I felt about it, but it's just all so real and really landed with me personally. Although I haven't been through much (if any) of what Gifty deals with in this book, these are still (mostly) things on the periphery that I'm not wholly disconnected from and really hit hard because of it. 4.5 stars.
Spoiler
is the ending, which was fine but I don't know, just felt a little out of nowhere and unsatisfactory. I appreciate the flash forward but personally didn't do it for me.Wish I could more adequately put into words how I felt about it, but it's just all so real and really landed with me personally. woow.
i love the conflict of it all with religion and science. the story evolves itself around that but also picks up so many more important subtopics like mental health, racism and drugs. it was a challenging read but it's a beautifully written book which struggled to put down at times.

A story of a young scientist pursuing her PhD in neuroscience and questioning her belief in god while processing her mother’s depression after her elder brother dies of heroin addiction.

Still coming to grips with this beautiful story. I loved the way the narrative was weaved through time as we peeled back the layers of Gifty's character. I was a little disappointed in the ending and would have preferred things ending a little less neat.
