This is an excellent book. Dark and twisted, truly creepy, but with a lot of very black humour. It's a unique tale and a very well realised world, with absolutely mesmerising characters. I already hated clowns and now I have new reasons to be creeped out by them! The ending was a bit of a let down for me, but it was satisfying and made sense in the context of the novel as a whole. I took a while getting around to reading this one, but I'm really glad I did.

I wanted to like this a lot more. And I am clearly in the minority here, as most everyone else appears to have loved this book. It had a great premise, I love circuses, and I love creepy stuff but in the whole scheme of things, it just got weird. The whole magic homicidal, personality changing clown makeup thing was a bit much and I never really ended up liking or connecting with any of the characters. I did like the beginning and there were some humorous moments. I appreciated the dark humor and I didn't hate it, but it took me a long time to get through and I certainly didn't end up liking it.
