A thoroughly researched account of the scum of the earth (aka Alex Jones) and the spread of harmful conspiracies surrounding the horrific school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. Williamson draws strong ties between these decade-old lies propagated by Jones et al. and the rise of Trumpism and “alternative truths” that have proliferated through the under regulation of social media, especially through conspiracy groups on Facebook, culminating in the popularity of QAnon and the January 6th insurrection on the Capitol.

After I had gotten this book from the library, there were two more mass shootings in quick succession. WTF is wrong with this country.

There were a few instances where I noted repeated phrases and quotes from earlier in the book - but it is certainly challenging to edit a book of this scope and length and it didn’t detract too much from my reading experience.

I feel for the many hours of InfoWars spewing Williamson must have had to watch for this book. And the interviews with conspiracy spreaders? Sketchy, indeed. I’m glad deplatforming has been fairly effective in at least some of these cases.

I once read a piece from a reporter on internet stalking and violence that almost every time she traced someone in Nazi or Nazi-esque subgroups through to their turning point, it led back to Gamergate. It made her think how sad it was that the community bluntly refused to take the terrorizing of women seriously or listen to those women about what was really happening and the toll it took. So now it's happening to more and more people.

This book makes that argument about fake news, alternative realities, deep state conspiracies, and the "feral lack of empathy" so often shown. It's convincing.

The story is heartbreaking, and it will happen again. It already is.

Very informative for understanding the current (at time of this review) Jones trial in Texas. It's a terrible read (nothing about Sandy Hook could be otherwise) but very well put together and very worth reading to understand much of what's happened to American culture in the past two decades.
