2.5 stars. I kept wanting more from each aspect of this book. I appreciate not particularly liking any character, they at least all felt authentic. This book doesnt "tell" but it also doesnt "show" so im not sure what it is doing to successfully give us a story.
Intriguing premise
I appreciate the ideas presented to the reader and what the writer was trying to do with the book, but I really struggled in places to stay engaged. I couldn't really connect or care that much about the characters. I think that if done well, this could be the basis for an interesting television series or movie.

The "richest man in the universe" bit seemed tired, but otherwise a really solid locked room mystery in space.
This book has:
Flawed characters
Creepy AIs
An ending that doesn’t tie things up in a pretty bow but reflects the messiness of life in general
A space wolf
So yeah, it was definitely my jam.

OK well as a closed room murder mystery it never quite coheres but as a science fiction shipboard murder problem it is suitable complex, elaborate and getting every more elaborate with a fine collection of disparate characters.
Short but really good. Oh that we had different planets to immigrate to. But humanity still does not improve. Hope that is not what really happens.
Edit: Upon discussing with others and thinking more about this, I'm changing this from a 4 to a 3. I just don't think this one will stick with me.
This is a really tough one to rate, but I'm going to say 3.5 stars, rounded up.
Let's start with plot - I found it engrossing. Any sort of mystery, especially a locked room mystery, I find myself very invested in. I thought the set up here was engaging and fun and I couldn't wait to find out what happened.
Characters - This is where things start to fall flat for me. The author writes with a certain distance from his characters, and because of this, I found it hard to root for them, or to understand their motivations. Some characters even felt unnecessary to the overarching story.
The Ending - Going to do this without spoiling. I found the ending, in some way, satisfactory. But in other ways I found it disappointing. Part of the fun of a mystery novel is thinking back to all the little clues you missed that may have helped you figure out the killer before the end. This book didn't take that approach, so I was a bit frustrated with the reveal.
Overall though, I was pretty engrossed. I looked forward to reading more, to seeing what happened. This book definitely won't be for everyone but I personally found a lot to enjoy in it.

That ending came almost out of nowhere. The story was a little slow-paced and it's hard for me to continue reading stories that have bad event after bad event continuously, but it was still a very good book and I'd probably recommend it to other sci fi fans.
