This is probably my favorite so far; I loved when Lady took over briefly as Annalist. At the end of her book I thought "oh crap" at the cliffhanger! Someone has messed up and gotten her negative attention. She's proven even without her full magical powers that she's dangerous to cross. And the magic is very slowly coming back.

I liked Case's voice in The Silver Spike. He was so matter-of-fact and very different from the more educated Croaker and Lady. The 3rd person cuts to other characters, like Smeds, make it feel like someone added these records to the Company Annals later. It was nice to find out what happened to the remnants of the Company in the North, what that dust up at the Temple was all about (that Croaker & Co. see from a distance in a previous book), and get some closure on those characters.

I felt more connected to some of these characters than I have in some of the other novels. I even liked and sympathized with Smeds, though I had to keep reminding myself he's a pedophile and ends up doing some terrible things through the novel to survive. Old Man Fish was also a good character. Raven's descent was sad, but necessary, I think. The ending battle was weird, but in a good way. It's not always a neat, tidy combat against the great evil. Things happen, people mess up, get hurt, and others are left feeling helpless. It felt more real, I guess, than many other fantasy "endboss" fights.

Now on to the Glittering Stone novels in "Return of the Black Company" and "Many Deaths of the Black Company." I'm a tad nervous because I hear Murgen skips around and is very self-focused, but we shall see.
