This is a great space opera with very grating characters. I especially did not care for Jim, who we're told has this great moral compass and always does the right thing, when half the time I'm yelling at him because he's actually being an idiot. (Minor spoiler)
And then the only actual female character decides to get with him because.... idk. Because there has to be a romance I guess.

It's too bad because the main plot and political intrigue were interesting and I would like to see where it goes from here, but I don't know if I can make myself read more of the series because I really don't like some of these characters (and some of their attitudes about women border on questionable and aren't really challenged by the narrative).
The pacing was also a bit off, but this would have been forgivable if I'd had no other complaints.
You might not care as much about this and just want a good space opera with political intrigue. If that's you, you could still give this book a try and decide for yourself.

Too misogynistic, patriarchal, and boring. There is infinite potential for a space opera and this one chose cops, guns, thugs, guns, rape, bombs, detectives, guns, prostitutes, guns... you get the picture.

I prefer my sci-fi to be as imaginative, adventurous, and action-packed as Brandon Sanderson's or as innovative, interesting, and intelligent as Becky Chambers'.

This book wasn’t fantastic and it wasn’t terrible. The world is really interesting but the authors got really bogged down in the technical description sometimes, and most of the characters were very flat. The only character with any depth was Miller, and he is so much the main character of the story that it seems wild in retrospect that only half of the book was from his perspective. I found sometimes that I felt left out of what was happening- an action would happen so suddenly that I would go back a few paragraphs, convinced I had missed something, but in fact there just hadn’t been any lead-in  that made sense. I’ll probably continue on with the series but not right away.
