Max Brooks has never disappointed me with his horror so I knew that Devolution would keep me glued to it. I have an interest in cryptozoology and when I heard about this book before it was released I immediately put it on hold at my library.

Devolution centers on the found journals of Kate Holland and her time with her husband at Greenloop, a green energy utopia nestled in the Mt Rainier valley in Washington. One day, Mt Rainier erupts and the local wildlife aren't the only creatures stalking the isolated village...but monsters as well.

If you love the legends of Sasquatch, then Devolution is the book for you. Brooks' writing is sinister and no-holds-barred when it comes to the terror Kate and her neighbors go through in order to survive. Their green utopia that was once an escape from the rigors of city life must now become a fortress to protect them from the creatures that are terrorizing them.

Compared to other novels like World War Z or FantasticLand, this one isn't as good. I'll still read another similar novel by Brooks. I love this style of found-footage / survivor interviews.

Here's to hoping that Kate and Palomino are out in the woods, killing these monsters.
