I read this a few years ago and remember enjoying it a lot.

My reread was fine, but I would say enjoyed it less the second time around. I didn’t remember
the bit of slow burn that it took for more action to happen.

Some people seem to complain how unlikeable the characters were or stereotypically yuppy they were - but I read that as purposeful. That’s why these people wanted to live this lifestyle and why they were invited/chosen to be part of this experiment.

Anyways, it was just fine. I hadn’t come across other interesting plots about sasquatches so while not amazing by any means, still an entertaining read.

Told in the format of a reporter preserving a story of a mysterious massacre at a hightech community after a natural disaster, there are 3 narratives blended to tell the story. The main character at the community, her brother, and the forest ranger first on scene.

This was some great storytelling, after setting the scene in a quick and easy way. Disaster strikes and it doesn't take long for it to go from bad to a worst case scenario no one could have imagined. It keeps you on the edge of you seat all the way until the end.

The audiobook version was very well done

I wasn't totally sold on the main character, Kate, at first - or maybe ever - but the book was still utterly gripping. The format was similar to World War Z (news reports, journals, interviews), which I thought worked very well. Max Brooks must spend countless hours researching his books, and it shows. It reads so realistically it is easy to get lost in the novel.
