I had high hopes for this one since WWZ is one of my all-time favorite books. I listened to this one, and once again, the audio is great with a stellar cast. Once again, Brooks impresses with his research. This book is less sweeping in scale than WWZ and is more of a horror story. Some parts of the narration style did not work for me, but most of it was gripping and I couldn't stop listening. The ending tied everything together very nicely in a way that I wasn't expecting.
Overall, I really enjoyed this creature horror novel that had some sci-fi aspects to it. For me, I took a little time for the characters and plot to build. It is hard to top the unique feel that Brooks used with World War Z but I appreciate the familiar journalistic and retrospect approach. It is pretty clear that Brooks intended for social commentary to future strongly in this novel. There are some environmental and disaster explorations, the hubris of humans to believe they can "tame" nature, and what happens when social institutions fail to fully address disaster relief.

2.5 stars. I had a hard time getting into this book. I stopped and started several times and nearly gave up on it. I love found footage stories, but this one just didn't hit the mark for me. I did up my rating a bit because the last few chapters were the best part of the book.
