This book flew by! It was so short in comparison to the first book, it definitely read like a middle novel in a trilogy. A lot of good background was given on some characters and now I'm looking forward to the conclusion even more. Classic contemporary YA Sci-Fi.

Except the first sixty or so pages in which nothing significant happened, I truly loved this book. It was full of action, suspense and plot twists, sooo many plot twists! Also the different POVs made the book a total page-turner and it was interesting to read the story from different prospectives. Especially, I really enjoyed Ringer's POV and I can't wait to know more about her character in the next book!
Overall, this book wasn't as amazing as The Fifth Wave but it was still a really enjoyable read.

“No hope without faith, no faith without hope. No love without trust, no trust without love. Remove one and the entire human house of cards collapses.”

The stakes and action here are so much higher than in book one. A small group of humans are on the run from the invading aliens who want to squish them all and are getting frustratingly clever in their efforts to do so. Cassie and Ben lock horns over accepting their companion Silencer Evan as it gets increasingly hard to tell who is human. Teammates are captured, experimented on, and experience the mad scientist efforts of the Others. We get to see the fierce but vulnerable side of the fighter Ringer, Pound Cake and Teacup and the motley crew of child soldiers, the tall bombshell Silencer Grace, and more characters as the full alien plan slowly unfolds.

I can’t help but contrast this series with the Divergent series I’m also working through and notice how much more deep, rich, poetic, and meaningful this one is. It definitely deserves the blockbuster movie series treatment.

“She illumined the lightless, her life the lamp. The last star in a dying universe. ‘I am humanity,’ she had written. Self-centered, stubborn, sentimental, childish, vain. ‘I am humanity.’ Cynical, naive, kind, cruel. Soft as down, hard as tungsten steel.”

“From the moment their [alien] ship appeared, we’ve all been blind men patting an elephant.”

“Love is the one thing in the universe that’s unpredictable.”

I love Ringer. She was the best. Kind of weird that Ben didn’t get any sections in this book. I still can’t stand Evan, and Cassie is hard for me to like in this one. Don’t know that I’ll be reading the third.
