too many parts science; insufficient parts fiction.

Influx is the literary equivalent of the summer blockbuster movie. Large, explosive scenes layered with placeholder characters running around trying to stop the latest armageddon moment caused by irresponsible use of human innovation.

Daniel Suarez seems to have a solid science background and jams everything he knows about current and future technologies in one novel. Jon Grady, a self-taught physics genius, invents a way to reflect gravity. This breakthrough draws the attention of the clandestine government agency Bureau of Technology Control (BTC).

Grady is locked away in Hibernity, a super-prison that holds the world genius's of the past thirty years. Thus begins Grady's journey to escape, bring down the BTC and free the unfairly persecuted scientists.

The concepts are huge, awesome moments that really stretch the imagination. Unfortunately, like a Michael Bay film, the flimsy characters, bad dialogue and all, proverbially "jump the shark." The novel is entertaining and if you can, like you do watching the overhyped summer flick, suspend most of your higher order thinking skills, you will find the novel enjoyable.

Quite enjoyed this. Some pretty painful parts, but overall an interesting premise.

Wow. This is a phenomenal sci fi book. The right amount of action, science, and suspense. It has been a long time since I was so rapt in a book.

Solid read with a neat premise.

Really a 3.5. I enjoyed the book, although Suarez's writing tends to have a very macho edge to it. I think guys who like action books would love it.

I was not sold on the idea at the beginning of the book, Daemon seemed more like a right around the corner type future. However as you progress the concepts get more and more believable. Another thing that helps you get immersed in the story is that the protagonist is fighting EVIL guys. Not bad, not lowercase evil, all-caps puppy-kicking lets-torture-that-sweet-old-pie-baking-grandma EVIL characters. Very enjoyable read.

Ehhh.

I LOVED DAEMON and FREEDOM. Two of my favorite books ever, but this falls a little short.

This book started out OK, but I always felt like I was missing something. The CTC at times seemed all knowing and unstoppable, then in the next chapter, they would seem like incompetent goof ups. I liked the story, but the writing was not that great, and at times seemed pretty cliche. It was still entertaining, but I would only hesitantly recommend this book to a friend.
adventurous medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes

An OK read. Very fast-paced but also a bit too ludicrous and hollow.
