I do find myself more drawn to contemporary retellings that do something different with fairy tale archetypes, but of course to fully appreciate those you have to get to know the original source material too.
You probably know these stories already, or at least a version of them, but the original Grimm may be darker than you think.

Interesting to see how the tales were before they were scrubbed up to be less violent. Some of the tales are repetitive (how many times can a fleeing man and woman be turned into a rosebush and rose, followed by a pond and a duck?), but I thought it was interesting how many twists can be shared by fairly different stories. The volume is better to read as a cultural study rather than for the pure entertainment of the stories. For every Bluebeard, there are a dozen random stories that involve getting a head chopped off to break a curse.
I read a different edition, but anyway. Very repetitive, much more gruesome and violent than the tales we tell children today. Lots of very similar themes told over and over. Lots of evil moms and stepmothers. Lots of play on the the evil child(ren) versus the virtuous one. Good to read the original tales all the same.

Truly grimmer than the first volume! Hilarious stories (ie Donkey Cabbages) and many more religious ones which aren't as fun. Still, enjoyable to read overall.
