This was amazing! I'm very late to the game and I wasn't so sure how I would like it since I find myself drifting away from YA, but the prose was beautiful and though there isn't a big plot, the story grabs you and it's hard to put the book down. Did not expect this to be so chilling. The repetition, though intentional, did get a little tiring toward the end but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of this book.
It also helps that I enjoy ghost stories like The Sixth Sense, which E. Lockhart mentions as an inspiration for this book

I loved this book but I really did not expect the twist.
I thought it would be something akin to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, where a killer is revealed to be within their midst. However, it ended up just being a horrific tragedy killing 3 people. That twist was not as fun or exciting, but more depressing. I'm not saying it's bad, it just went a very different direction than I was expecting.

Review for We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Writing Quality 5/5
The unreliable, first-person narrative has a very poetic, fluid pace to it, and then we are snapped out of the trance by the abrupt and graphic intrusive thoughts of our MC, Cady. It’s believable. Her emotions were written in a way that I could feel them with every intense description, staccato wording, or lyrical paragraph. The relationships between the characters are realistic.  I did not see the plot twist coming until I was there but it made sense and looking back the hints were all there.  Lockhart’s writing made me ache for every single character.

Characters 4/5
Overall the characters are convincing, each showcasing their flaws and strengths. Cady uses beautiful adjectives to describe her group of Liars.  I didn’t give 5 stars only because the Sinclair family is a hyper-rich, snobby family (mostly) that kind of annoyed me.  This obviously is not a fault of the author.  Just my reaction to how well-written and realistic they are.

Plot 5/5
Unique and riveting. Following Cady on her journey to find out what happened during Summer 15 on Beechwood Island was so intriguing. I was always trying to figure out what happened. And when I thought I had the answer something would come along and change that.  I honestly was not expecting the plot twist, but it made. So. Much. Sense.

Post-reading Rating 5/5
This is a book I will think about for a long time and recommend to everyone.  I finished this, and then continued reading the author’s annotations because I needed to know how and why and what’s next.
Who Should Read This
-Can I say everyone?

Final Rating 4.75/5

I Should of left this book in 2014 where it belongs. I read this book when it came out when I was 14, and I wanted to re-read it now at nearly 23  before the prequel comes out this year. When I read it when I was younger I really enjoyed this, and the big plot twist had me in shock. Now it doesn't, I thought the characters were annoyingly pretentious and out of touch, and Candice is just plain stupid. There is also very little plot, and when there is plot it is everywhere. I think there are far better YA thriller/mysteries out there.
