Great concept but I feel like this is King at max waffle. Any other author would have been forced to cull at least 100 pages. Probably 200.

This was probably my favorite story by King so far but he’s so gross when describing teenagers and it kills the book for me

Duma Key surpassed my expectations by a mile! I had heard mixed reviews and I let those opinions influence my judgement. Big mistake! I love this story. I guess you could say it was a happy little accident. First and foremost, I love Florida. Art? Not so much. What were the odds of me falling in love with a book about art? I wouldn’t have predicted it. There are many layers to this story though as is often the case with Stephen King. This is a story about art, but also about love on many levels. The love between friends, between a father and daughter and also about learning to love oneself again after a life altering accident. It’s a great story. It’s beautiful, traumatic, disturbing, chaotic and it’s a little bit magnificent. I don’t know if it’s just me though but this seemed very reminiscent of The Shining and IT. I loved that about it, and I know Duma Key will never be as popular as those two stories and what a shame it is. I can’t guarantee that you will love this just because I did, all I’m saying is that if you gave up on this one, maybe it’s worth trying again.

When it comes to the past we all stack the deck.

A re-read. Didn’t remember much about this book at all. But really enjoyed it second time around. Loved the friendships between the main characters.
Nobody does friendship better than King.

It doesn’t get 5 stars from me though because I wasn’t overly keen on the last 150 or so pages… when the action ramped up I guess. I much preferred the day to day lives of the folk on Duma Key.

I had to take points off for Stephen King’s random pervertedness.  It happens once for one sentence in every one of his books, I’m not sure why.
Other than that, this is a beautifully terrifying book.  Other horror books that I have read seem subpar in comparison.  The author includes all the right touches of human life and in turn it highlights how frightening and out of order that things can turn out.  In fact, it is written into such a deep corner of emotion in one’s mind that I were to mention any specifics, I think it would give away some of the best parts.

The idea was brilliant, and the book was good, but it was too long. It definitely has outstayed its welcome.
