Having never seen Project Runway I wasn't really familiar with Tim Gunn outside of a passing knowledge that he was on the show, but I'm big into mentoring and leadership so I tend to read a lot of books on those subjects. I found this one to be fun, anecdotal, and inspiring, too, even with my limited knowledge of the show. I wasn't a fan beforehand, but now I'm interested in reading more of his books.

In this book by Project Runway mentor and former teacher Tim Gunn, he offers advice on teaching and mentoring. Anecdotes from Gunn's life, along with gossip and insider info on the fashion world, are interspersed with the teaching guidance. If you like Gunn, you will enjoy reading this, although I enjoyed some of his previous books more. I met Gunn at a book signing and had my copy autographed which was fun and he seems just as nice and genuine in real life as on his TV shows.

I was looking for insight to mentoring.  While I like Tim Gunn on Project Runaway, his book makes me wonder if I really would like him.  I really do not agree with this opinions of our current education system.

"His empathetic tone encourages educators and students alike to listen to his sensible, time-tested advice, and his frank advice makes clear that he's learned many of the lessons he's imparting through tough trial and error. Gunn's unique view of the world and genuine desire to help others are apparent on every page of this must-read." - Publisher's Weekly

I just re-read this for a presentation I gave on feedback and assessment in teaching. I love his approach to teaching--his "TEACH" acronym (truth-telling, empathy, asking, cheerleading, and hoping for the best) approach to giving students feedback is spot-on and helpful. Plus, his stories of being an administrator were useful and interesting, too.

Just not as inspiring as the title implies.. I was actually looking for mentoring advice and got very little of it. This is basically a collection of unrelated short vignettes very loosely strung together with the theme of teaching and learning. Gunn reads his own audiobook which was great but this book has an almost mean spirited mood. Gunn calls out a lot of his peers specifically and seems to be using this platform to settle some old scores. Even then end of the book, which I thought would be this great inspiring ending was actually just a list of bookgroup questions for various groups. Meh.

There were good parts to this, I loved hearing about his teaching career, but I wanted more of that. It goes off on a lot of long tangents that are hard to relate back to mentoring and teaching.
