Really well written. I liked the sense of place and time, the creeping horror was well paced, the characters well-drawn. Yes this followed the Hollywood film arc pretty consistently (I'm not surprised it's been made into a film) but it felt satisfying rather than predictable.

An imaginative story but the writing is a bit clumsy and religion is dealt with very heavy handedly.

If you asked me what I thought about this book at about 50 pages in, I hated it!

However, there's a point where the main character starts to figure out the girl's secret and how she has been able to go with out food for so long. From that point on - wow!!!!

I loved the light discussion of religion in the book too. It was eye opening to be reminded how much Catholics and Protestants once hated each other.

Haunting

The beginning and middle: 2 stars
The end: 4 stars

Not a fan of this one. It was strange, the writing wasn't bad, but it was just dull to me.

Meh. Definitely paints religious people in a bad light, which felt a bit heavy handed. And the ending was a bit too neat and tidy for me.
Also. Why was Lib so averse to force feeding the girl? "I'll do anything to save her" my ass.
The random journalist who gives up his life and agrees to kidnap and raise a little girl out of the kindness of his heart seemed... a bit too fortuitous. Like, what are the odds that a super nice guy would randomly show up. It would have been a more satisfying story if Lib had managed to save the girl on her own, without the inexplicable help from some random dude.
Anyway. A forgettable mystery about the stupidity of religious people.
