Honestly this book was a bit of a jumbled mess. Nothing was really worked out, everything felt like it was halfway done. Which is a shame because I do think the idea of this book is intriguing, but the execution of it lacked significantly.

A well-written, engrossing book that reads like a mash-up of some of my favorite pieces of fiction. It's YA, but definitely entertaining for an adult. I plan to continue reading the series - something I can't say for the last several YA series I began.

Summary: Hermione is an apprentice in the royal library whose orderly life is derailed by the crown prince, Young Snape. Unbeknownst to Hermione, she is an Airbender - the only Airbender to come along for over a century. With Snape's guidance, Hermione discovers her magic and begins to contemplate leaving the safety of her books for Hogwarts. But unseen forces are moving against Snape, and Hermione will risk more than she knows for the sake of their friendship.

I almost gave this book two stars because in many ways, this book wasn't that awful. But I changed my mind, deciding to go with one. Normally, when I rate a book two stars, it's because it was yes, not that great, but it did something to have a bit of intrigue or to set itself apart from other bad books. See my review of Twilight if you want an example of that.

But Air Awakens was not one of those books for me. I finished it, yes, but only to see if it got any better by departing from the well-worn path of YA. And it didn't. Not even once.

This book hit every standard elemental and YA cliche there was, never once veering off into places that could've been interesting and really it set it apart from other YA books. It's just a cardboard cut out of a story really. It's the reason it didn't make any of my shelves either. Even my "passable" books have something semi-interesting about them, something that makes them different from others in the genre (even if I didn't find that something to be well developed or well used by the author.)

Let's do a headcount shall we?

1. The protagonist is a nobody female who doesn't think she's pretty.

2. Magic is done with the four elements, or it was until one got wiped out.

3.Even though they're supposed to be dead, the protagonist is somehow part of those lost people.

4. Female hero is afraid of her powers and unsure of herself.

5. She draws the attention of several males in the story, all of whom seem to be really into her, but it's not entirely clear why because she doesn't have really a set of defining traits besides fidgeting/clumsiness/liking books.

Okay, there's more, but I'm kind of done because I don't really want to be writing this review all day.

Now, the writing itself isn't actually bad and no character is incredibly obnoxious, but for me, that was because none of them were developed enough to even reach that point. Honestly, this book is just...flat for me. Nothing is so horrible that it makes me want to scream or had so much promise that it could've been good but wasn't. It was just...there. Nothing incredibly bad. Nothing incredibly good.

Not going to be continuing the series. It just wasn't for me. Too much of the same.

This rating is me being kind. First 100 pages were cheeks and THEN after the letter exchange it started to become a little sum sum. Disappointed @ them lying tiktokers.

Definitely one of the better books on Kindle Unlimited. It reminded me a bit of the earlier Throne of Glass books.
