This book was a cute short read that had me giggling and kicking my feet. Near the end, I realized how many days we had followed the characters, and it shocked me.

Ruby Red is a time-travel YA fantasy novel that intrigued me simply for the time traveling element of the story of it and because this is a highly praised series translated from German.

This adventure is told from the point of view of 16-year-old, Gwyneth Shepherd who has a family secret. Their family blood line has a time-traveling gene that sometimes skips generations through the female side of the family. With each female time traveler, we learn that there is a male time-traveling counterpart from another family line. Naturally, there is a secret society consisting of the most brilliant minds in history who are the guardians of this multi-generation family secret. Gwyneth’s cousin is believed to have been “gifted” with this gene and has been preparing all her life in fencing, foreign languages, history, and anything else she may need to prepare for time travel. However, it is an unwelcomed surprise when Gwyneth, not her cousin, is the one taking uncontrolled leaps into history.

Without trying to give away any more spoilers, I really enjoyed this book for the pacing, the sense of danger throughout the book, and the author’s ability to create likable good guys/gals and loathsome bad guys/gals. I like that it made me want to research what parts of history and historical figures are true and which were created specifically for this historical fantasy/romance/sci-fi novel. After how badly one of the main characters treats Gwyneth from day one, I couldn’t understand how she could so easily fall for this character. However, I feel she could be forgiven because it is plausible (and dare I say, relatable) that a teenager would become infatuated with someone who is not worthy of their attention. Overall, this was a fun story and it ends in a CLIFFHANGER! Darn it! Now, I must read the next two books in the series but will do so with pleasure.
