Slecht geschreven… erg chaotisch. Maar de inhoudelijke kern is raak en sterk.
I've given this book two stars (instead of one) only because there is some useful stuff about mindfulness in it but you have to sift through an awful lot of Ruby Wax being Ruby Wax and she has never really done it for me. Having said that, there are other authors who have written much better books about mindfulness so unless you really enjoy Wax's particular strain of comedy, don't bother.
Reading this book in the midst of a deep depression was the wrong time to do so. I feel I may have enjoyed it more had I not been in such a bad place myself. Starting this book expecting to gather coping mechanisms I came away disappointed. In my opinion I found the authors recalling of her own experiences a little self indulgent and detracted from the more informative technical aspects found elsewhere. I found a couple of useful techniques I can use, and do so on a daily basis, but came away after reading this book with a sense of wanting more information and less attempts at humour. I have read other books in this vein that I enjoyed more and others that I found more informative.
Humoristisch geschreven, maar dat verwacht je natuurlijk ook bij Ruby Wax. Geen hoogvlieger maar goed te lezen.
Very clear (and entertaining) explanation of how the brain works, managing to go into more detail than many books I've read whilst remaining readable and easy to relate to. More of a manifesto than a manual for mindfulness, although there are some exercises towards the end.
I often struggle with mental health books as they always start by describing depression or other mental illness and I find it so triggering that I cannot continue reading. That was a bit of a problem with this one too, but I managed to survive the first section, perhaps due to Ruby Wax's irreverent comedic interjections! The section on the physical workings of the brain was the most fascinating for me and I found it particularly helpful. I liked the practical exercises at the end of the book and will return to these as required. I'm sure Ms Wax's style won't suit everybody, and her witty asides can sometimes break the concentration, but overall I think this is an excellent and useful book.
Wax is brave and funny woman opens up with interplay with her own story and facts on the mind. This helps the facts seem conversational, easier to process and stops from becoming overly preachy. This book has many faults though. There are very broad generalisations, repetition (her references to her degrees for instance) and a few placements of bad jokes. There are also negative jokes that are stereotyping of: illnesses, cultures or sexualities and he pronouns for refferences to humanity as a whole. It is in need of a good editor.
Aside from these faults, Wax communicates her subject matter with passion, knowledge, and wit. The book explains things in a refreshingly different manner with an easier way of comprehending the diverse subject matters within the text.

Really interesting read. A little too much ego indulgence, but it's Ruby Wax, so y'know, expect and enjoy it. Like the idea of neuroplasticity - hope it's the case. Some good ideas, some good exercises, some good stories. And some self indulgent hippy shit as well though too. Certainly worth a read...
