It's hard to not compare this book to the other companion book to Welcome to Night Vale "Welcome to Night Vale" when, though this book was interesting and had themes of religion and love and family, I also found a lot of it just fell flat for me. In Welcome to Night Vale it's almost like the randomness and silliness leads to something deeper and I feel that this book wanted to have that but, unfortunately, for me it just didn't and that made it kind of hard for me to get through.

I had no idea this was the second book in a series, or the 5th book based in Nightvale. I didnt know it was a podcast. It was weird and made little sense at times but I enjoyed it immensely and machined through it so it absolutely deserves a 4.

I've had "Welcome to Night Vale" in my podcast queue for a long time now and have never listened to it. It was recommended by someone or on some other podcast and the description sounded entertaining. But in the queue it has languished behind Limetown, Rabbits, Tanis, hello from the magic tavern, etc. When It Devours! came up as a suggested book I decided to take a chance on it and then, if my toes enjoyed the dip in the Night Vale pool, I would listen to the podcast.

It Devours!? Oh yeah, I've read that book. It was good enough to get to me to start the podcast.

This book was amusing enough to keep me entertained and sufficiently empty of any deep meaning - despite trying at times - to prevent me from thinking too hard. It bounced between three and four stars for me. In the end I settled on three, though in fairness it deserves three and a half. But not four. The humour felt too forced at times (like the puns in the Xanth novels where storylines are built around a punchline and often suffer for it).

In the end it provided more chuckles than eye-rolls and I did enjoy it. I'd recommend this to people who find the post cast amusing.

this was like. my favorite book in middle school. it's fun to revisit media you liked a while ago and see how your opinions on it change, even though the media itself stays the same :-)
i didnt enjoy it as much as i think i did then, but it was still a fun read (especially reading it alongside all of the things that are happening in the night vale podcast atm). nilanjana and carlos u have my heart forever.
