This not my normal genre at all. Read it for my reading group. It took me tell chapter 10 to really get into it. I guess it was the world building part. By chapter 20 I was really loving it and by the end I could not believe the ending.

I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did! Really interesting & rich mythology and Persian references, with leads who I really rooted for, both individually and together. I really appreciated how the FMC actually has personality traits, and talents, and dreams, outside of the trauma and oppression she’s faced. The themes around division and prejudice were also surprisingly well done, for example when the rich MMC couldn’t understand why the FMC would be so fussed about some medical supplies that to him cost barely any money - but to her was her entire wage - it felt like an actual character arc for him to deepen his connection and understanding of her - rather than sort of being her saviour or something.
The implication at the end was of a secondary love interest to be explored in the second book - so can’t wait for the love triangle to come!
