The Door in the Hedge is a collection of four short stories. They are all fairy tales. Two of them are retellings of the classic The Princess and the Frog and The Tweleve Dancing Princesses. They were wonderfully retold and added to story in their own way but still retaining the original story. This gave a timeless sense to the stories as seen in most of McKinley's work. I really enjoyed her original stories. They also had a timeless quality and well matched with the other tales. All these stories have princesses and magic. I throughly enjoyed reading this book.

Entertaining but not as engaging as her novel-length fairy tale retellings. These stories all felt long on exposition with hastily wrapped-up endings.
