"Mind thoughts are like whispers, but ****** feelings of love, joy, fear--well, it's almost hard to hang on when you are to read them, they can be so fast and furious."

I picked up this book because i thought it would be charming decoy from the trip down the rabbit hole when i reread [b:The Good House|41539|The Good House|Tananarive Due|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388594362s/41539.jpg|41086]. What dark and eerie things can a quaint New England town full of affluent upper middle class have me drag around in my mind all day until i can dive into the next chapter at bedtime? I expected Peyton Place: a little alcoholism, some narcissism, dinner parties, affairs, country clubs, sail boats, class warfare, and a few desperate housewives. I got my 50s soap opera drama and a little bit more. It was well written. The characters were well developed the people and horses; but no so much the autistic children. The plot development was superb. It painted a vivid picture of the landscape and the character.

People from the best of homes have the worst of problems.

Book club’s back! I would never have picked this one up (what a dud of a cover) but found it to be a quick and well-written read.

Notes:
- Middle aged Holden Caulfield
- Relationship with alcohol
- Breadcrumb style reveals
- Townies and rich people problems
- House as a metaphor
- Really loved those last few paragraphs

I so thoroughly enjoyed this book - so subtle yet entertaining.

I absolutely loved this as an audiobook! The author does a great job of exploring the mind of an alcoholic in denial, pulling back events in her life layer by layer.

It was okay, never really got into it and could put it down for a couple of days without having the strong need/desire to pick it up to read on to see what would happen. The last 40 pages or so was the only part where I kept wanting to read to see what would happen.

This book. I listened to this audiobook and it was AMAZING. I loved the story. I loved the characters. I loved the style. I loved how Mary Beth Hurt made HIldy come alive. Gosh it was good. Fabulously great.

Loved it..

Very well written and darkly funny book about a 60 something year old alcoholic living in a small town in Massachusetts.

I listened to this one, and it definitely changed the experience because the narrator is SO faulty. Don't trust her. She's nuts. The reader does an excellent job with the narrator, and I definitely walked around more and was happy to be listening in the car.

4 stars for the story itself but 5 for the brilliant narration in the audiobook.
