[Audio] 3.5 stars rounded up. Loved the narrator—she definitely enhanced my enjoyment of this book. I also enjoyed the setting a of a small coastal town in Massachusetts.
I almost can't explain why I enjoyed this book. The main character, Hilde Goode, isn't a likable person and has lots of issues, but the author got me to root for her anyway. I loved being inside her head and seeing things from her perspective. It is so well written and such a wonderful character study of not just Hilde, but the supporting characters also - they all felt like real people. I listened to the audio and it was very well done by Mary Beth Hurt.
I think the audio book version makes this an even greater read. I really enjoyed the book. I alternated between disliking the main character and feeling quite sorry for her. The ending was a bit too tidy in my opinion.

To be honest, I’m not sure I can provide an informed summary of this book. A whole lot of nothing happened, and then all of a sudden, a whole lot happened.
I don’t think I’m the proper demographic for this book. My mom really enjoyed it!

I’m having a hard time focusing on reading right now and kept picking up and putting down my Kindle on this one. The narrative got a little tedious and sad, focusing on alcohol addiction, but overall it was mildly entertaining.

Great audio listen-wanted to just keep listening. Excellent narration but the story is depressing so going with 3.5 stars- well written, well narrated - good solid audio read.
There’s so many reasons I loved this story but one of the biggest is Hildy. Her character is funny, witty and very charming but has an underlying sadness that she’s not really aware of but the reader feels. While getting to know her and being privy to her slow unraveling, you begin to feel that Hildy’s life is a train that’s quite possibly nearing the point of derailment. And here’s what that blurb above is missing…this story has a fantastic mystery at it’s heart, one I couldn’t figure out until the author skillfully revealed the answer. Notice how I’m not sharing anything about the mystery? I think you’ll appreciate going in without knowing about it. Although the story centers on Hildy, there’s a great cast of supporting characters that will intrigue you and keep you turning the pages until you find out how they all intertwine…cue the derailment image!
Pretty boring and the main character was really annoying. I guess the author used to be an alcoholic so I can say it's good in that it's an accurate portrayal of alcoholics, but that's about it. Avoid this one if you can.
