I could not put this book down. It is so well written, and the characters are so well crafted. It is paced perfectly, and despite the fact that the main character is flawed, I loved her. Leary is now an author whose books I will wait for with great anticipation.
I absolutely loved this book. Hilde was such an interesting character and made for a great narrator. I loved seeing her point of view, especially around her thoughts and feelings about alcoholism. I listened to this book, and the narrator did a particularly good job of bringing the characters to life.
I really enjoyed this book.
Hildy is an unreliable narrator and that's what makes the book so interesting.
It's a well-told story of a proud and successful woman facing lots of changes in her life. She does a lot of internal rationalization and justification which makes for some pretty memorable encounters.

This turned out to be a pretty good book. It kind of reminded me of [b:Olive Kitteridge|1736739|Olive Kitteridge|Elizabeth Strout|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320430655s/1736739.jpg|3263906]. Hildy Good was the same kind of forceful, brash, opinionated woman as Olive. There were a whole host of small town characters to get to know to varying degrees. The story is really about Hildy's struggles to stay sober and rationalizations when she doesn't. You get exasperated with her at times and want to give her a good shaking and a high quality mirror so she could take a good hard look at herself and her behavior. Because, frankly, sometimes, the sight ain't pretty.
Cranky, alcoholic, realtor, descendant of Goody Good, neb-nose and believeable.
I liked this book, it is one I hand sell over and over. Fatal attraction, parnoia and a good story combine to give a sunny yet creepy look at high-stakes house selling.
When is it time to return to your childhood friends?
When do you accept help?
How closed-mouth can a small town be?

This book had a lot of potential but it never really delivered. I was feeling the whole witch theme but then everything went berserk at the end. The narrator's actions made no sense...which I guess what supposed to be a result of her alcholism but it was too erratic to keep track of her mooods and the time of day. And the death at the end was pretty pointless.
not a life-altering read, but a funny story to pass the time before bed.
