I enjoyed this book, although it was a little oh, I don't know exactly, but there's a sort of sheen that many books rated 4+ stars on Amazon seem to have. Either they fit too neatly in a category, or they're just slightly superficial, or something. Anyway, it was an enjoyable book and good if not great.

Would give it a 3.5, if I could. A light end-of-summer read, with an unreliable narrator who is an alcoholic. The narrator made the book for me, though, because it was fun to pick through her unreliability.

I wish I could give this a 4.5 (darn you and your lack of half-points, GoodReads!). This book has an interesting plot line that picks up about half-way through and consistently weaves themes throughout the story without hitting you over the head with them. Perhaps the book's great assets, however, are its characters. They are engaging, three dimensional characters that make you feel like you grew up in the small town with them. You simultaneously cheer for the characters...and want to shake them. I actually listened to this book on audiotape and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book!

I just. Don’t really know.

Loved everything about this book. The twists, the turns, the characters. Great book.

A surprisingly captivating story told through the accurate portrayal of an addict. Some say that makes for an unreliable narrator, but I don't agree. Every book is told from a certain perspective. So doesn't that make every perspective a little off from the total story? I feel like that's the beauty and craziness of life and a portrayal that came through in this story.

Stayed up to 1am reading it. Liked everything but the ending.

I'm between a 3 and 4 on this one. Parts of it were fantastic (the last hundred pages) but other parts just dragged.

This is definitely a character driven novel, not plot driven at all. It is clear that the author knows her characters very well, particularly her main character, Hildy, and that makes it easy to feel like we know her too. Hildy feels really real, and is equally likable and frustrating. The plot sort of meanders around but it's a pleasure to experience it along with Hildy.

Review as shared on my blog, Dine & Dish http://dineanddish.net/2013/08/connect-through-reading-my-summer-reads/

I actually listened to The Good House through audible.com and loved the voice of the narrator. The story is the whole package… riveting, mysterious, sad, hilarious, sexy and more. Hildy is a 60 year old real estate agent in a small New England town. She is also a raging alcoholic who thinks that, even though she drinks only when she is lonely, she has her alcoholism under control. The story intertwines with interesting characters… her own daughter, her ex-husband, a past fling, her grandbaby and a new found friend. Each little corner of the book takes you on unexpected turns, but all comes together in an ending very fitting to the story. I gave The Good House 4 stars on Goodreads (and if you like audio books, highly recommend listening to it that way.)
