Maybe more a 3.5 than a 4. Beautifully drawn characters and a cosy vintage feel but still with something important so say. Maybe just a little slow paced??

Embroidery in Winchester cathedral

A very quiet story but with many layers. I listened to this and I’m not sure I would have read this in a physical format. I usually don’t like historical fiction but this was very enjoyable.

Thank you to Viking Books for the advanced copy in exchange for a review.

I have read and loved everything that Tracy Chevalier has written, and A Single Thread was no exception. A beautifully written story about Violet, a "surplus woman" after losing her fiancé in WW1, and her life after she moved away from her family.

I loved the description of Violet's life; how she had a job as a typist, rented a room in a boarding house, loved visiting cathedrals, and fell into the hobby of embroidering. I thought it was very realistic, yet the story drew me in.

I loved the secondary characters in this story. Hearing about her embroidery friends, her family, her boss, etc, just made me able to picture them all and I felt like they were real people. The author brought them to life. Even the "corn field man", which I kind of thought was a bit superfluous, was described so well that I got nervous every time she saw him! Violet's mom was one of those "love to hate" characters for me - she was awful but written so well!

The description and details of embroidery was excellent. I could visualize the stitches and colors, and I thought it was a perfect hobby for Violet to take up. I also really enjoyed the details about the bell ringing and cathedrals. You could tell the amount of research that went into this book was extraordinary.

I think any historical fiction fan and reader of Tracy Chevalier will enjoy this book!

Judging for the booktube prize.
This story and these characters bored me to death.

Ik hielp dit boek te bestaan in het Nederlands en ik ben hyped

I believe this is my favorite of all the books I've read by Chevalier. I know part of that is the fact that needlework plays such a prominent part in the story and needlework is one of my passions. I always appreciate so much all the research that Chevalier does for her works of historical fiction. And how she takes people who are minor notes in history and points to the great value of their contributions.

I really loved the main character and enjoy reading historical fiction through a very narrowed down, concise lens, i.e. broderers at the Winchester Cathedral in between WWI & WWII. The specificity makes it unique and more personal-feeling. However, I was a bit frustrated with the romance/ending in ways I can't quite yet put my finger on.

I do love a book that nails an overal feeling/atmosphere of loneliness without making the character seem pathetic or in need of a savior.
