Spectacular informative, heart-breaking book. There is so much tension and suffering that sometimes it does not even allow you to cry. With this book historical questions are becoming crystal clear and in the same time confuse the readse with all the thraumatic experiences.
This is by far one of the best books I've read. The story is fascinating but also harrowing, and emotionally draining. It is an important story to be told; the plight and struggle of these 3 women is at times incomprehensible. It answers many questions in my mind about what living under Mao was really like.
The book is extremely well researched and written. Although a factual text, it is written in a way that you often find yourself feeling like you're reading a novel. This makes it harder to comprehend that these atrocities actually took place.
Apart from learning more about what really happened in China during this period, I was also blown away by the extraordinary strength of the 3 women. They are absolutely inspiring.
Jung's afterward gives a beautiful overview of her life and feelings towards China. She is an extraordinary woman.
If you're interested in Chinese history and/or feminist and female empowerment then this book is for you.

Saatuani kirjan päätökseen, huokaisin syvään. Ensinnäkin, koska yli 500 sivuisen kirjan lukeminen oli melkoinen urakka, mutta myös siksi, että minusta tuntui melkein siltä kuin olisin pidätellyt henkeäni koko kirjan ajan.
Valitsin Villijoutsenet luettavaksi kahdesta syystä: olen ottanut tavoitteekseni lukea enemmän maailmankirjallisuutta ja myös kiellettyjä kirjoja. Tämä on molempia. Tarttuessani kirjaan en tiennyt juuri mitään kiinan historiasta, puhumattakaan Mao Zedongin valtakaudesta.
Villijoutsenet kertoo tositarinan erään kolmen sukupolven naisista. Jo ensimmäisissa luvuissa minua odotti shokki, sillä minulla ei ollut aavistustakaan siitä, kuinka äskettäin naisten jalkoja vielä sidottiin kiinassa. Vielä järkyttävämpää oli lukea Maon ajan hirveyksistä.
Kirjan hahmoihin kiintyy väistämättäkin. Kirjassa on esitetty sukupuu ja valokuvia kirjan keskeisistä henkilöistä. Etenkin kirjailijan vanhempien kohtalo historian pyörteissä kosketti minua syvästi.
Kuinka tällaiselle kirjalle voi antaa arvosanan? Kirja perustuu erittäin henkilökohtaisiin kokemuksiin ja kertoo todellisista tapahtumista? Kuinka kirjan “juonta” tai henkilöitä voisi edes arvostella? Kirja on kieltämättä pitkä, mutta siinä seurataan kolmea sukupolvea historian myllerryksessä. Miten kirjailija voisi jättää juuri mitään pois? Arvosanani perustuu siis täysin “mututuntumaan”.
Kirjan tapahtumat ovat osittain hyvin järkyttäviä, joten en voi myöskään sanoa että nautin kirjan lukemisesta. Silti, kirja on erittäin vaikuttava ja antaa aivan erilaisen kosketuspinnan historiaan kuin mikään historiateos ikinä voisi.
Suosittelen kirjaa lämpimästi jos haluaa oppia lisää Kiinan historiasta tavallisten ihmisten silmien kautta.
