Read this. It made me horribly angry and depressed at times but it made me understand a lot more about Mao and the Cultural Revolution, and it's incredibly well-written. And when you've read this, read "Do Not Say We Have Nothing" by Madeleine Thien

My Youtube review: https://youtu.be/PAvmeJBQW14

A look into some of the everyday personal experiences that have been missing from my other recent readings on 20th-century Chinese history. The book reads as a collection of family stories passed down over three generations. Impressively, there are really no major time gaps in this narrative that covers the end of imperialism, the Chinese Civil War before, during, and after WWII, and Mao's China up through the end of the Cultural Revolution. It's a long and painful story, but there's an unmistakable feeling of hope throughout the narrative, of appreciating people who can still perform little acts of kindness under the most trying circumstances.

I don't think you'd need to know much Chinese history to understand what's going on; the author provides some essential background, and I found it all made sense despite not knowing much that came before the Great Leap Forward.

Uma viagem incrível. Aprendi muito com esta leitura!

I miss my mom after reading this. I can see why my grandfather and Chinese ancestors would brace the journey to flee from China.

Super eye opening to China's history!

Extrêmement intéressant et prenant, permet de découvrir une période historique de l'intérieur. Vraiment super.
Il faut que je trouve une version plus récente avec la partie expliquant son vécu lors de ses premières années en Angleterre.
