The main reason I picked up this book was I had limited knowledge of Chinese history and wanted to expand it. Its an exceptional long and detailed account of trials and tribulations of 3 generations of Chinese woman. It's absolutely heartening to read about the oppression faced by the Chinese population during the regime of Chairman Moa. This is a long read but it surely made me count my blessings on being born as an urban educated Indian woman. If you have no idea about China and its history just pick this book.

One of the most important and insightful books I’ve read all year, if not in my life. It took me a while to get through, especially the chapters on the cultural revolution because of the brutal and emotional descriptions (the writing style itself is actually very easy and enjoyable to read), but I would recommend everyone to attempt this read at least once in their life.
