Easy read, great storytelling mechanics, not horror, but the stories themselves aren’t great.
“Elevation” has moments, and if might make a good movie, so long as the “lesbians through a male gaze” elements are dropped.
I’d really only recommend if you’re a King completionist.

This was honestly more of an emotional book than I was expecting especially the short story about the dog but the main story as well had me choked up at a few parts

A 240-pound man living in the small town of Castle Rock, Maine begins to lose weight but doesn't lose any mass. He still maintains his gut, his same waist size, and the same muscle mass. The results make for a fascinating (albeit short) read.
What I like most about Stephen King's books (and I've only read a small portion of his library) is his style. I don't know how best to describe it, other than it just seems natural while reading it. Most of the prose is conversational, which makes for a quick read, even in King's longer books. The parts in between the conversations are not fluff. As a reader, you get succinct details. Everything you need to know, but nothing extra that just fills the pages and makes you want to put the book down. There are no lulls in the story that only serve to lose the reader. I like that. King's stories are easy to follow whether reading or listening to the audio versions. Not all books, even the "best sellers," have that going for them. You get a sense that King respects his readers.
I do wish this story were longer. It felt complete at the end, but because it was a good read, I wanted to keep going.

A great short and easy read when you want a feel good and quick story that will still make you cry
I'm not sure what to say about Elevation, or even how to categorize it. Is it horror? Not in the jump-scare, things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, monsters-eating-your-face sort of way. But does the idea of losing weight without losing size, and with a day you'll weigh zero pounds looming, scare you? Then yes, you might call this horror. Or fantasy, in that I'm pretty sure there's no such documented case of a person being perfectly healthy, losing weight, and causing anything he/she touches to have zero weight -- sounds pretty fantastical to me.
All that being said, my main take-away here is that Elevation is a truly excellent read -- brief, spare, and finely crafted, with sharply defined characters, mounting tension, and an overall feeling of both well-being and loss permeating the entire story. Scott Carey is a likable guy stuck in a weird situation, who tries to make the best of things by doing his part to make a small difference in the lives of the people he cares for.
And despite the short length of the story, it was plenty of time to get emotionally involved. Was that a lone tear making its way down my cheek as I read the last few pages? I'll never tell.
Beautifully written, Elevation is a quick, low-commitment read that will leave you feeling -- dare I say it? -- elevated.
