Officially listed as a novel, in reality, King's 'Elevation' most definitely falls into the novella category (especially for him). A brisk 146 (physically small) pages, it's a little longer than one of King's 'full' short stories you'd find in one of his collections, and certainly the only Stephen King hardcover I've read cover-to-cover in a single day. One curious set-up lights the way for you zip through this short Castle Rock fable, and you won't be disappointed....unless, of course, you think this a horror novel just because of the author's name. It's not, rather it is one of King's character studies like "Joyland" or "11/22/63."

If you're looking for a fun one-day read, "Elevation" has you covered.

Two well written short stories. I must admit that some of King's short stories are better than others... but that is the way with short stories. Elevation was a joy for me to read. I gave me heart pangs. Scott Carey was a flawed but kind character, the kind that King writes so well. As many reviews reference it does bring to mind Thinner, but this brought more of the kindness of humanity. I recommend this quick read, and while I don't believe it is King's best, I do think it is a piece of good work.

Probably would be a more middle of the road rating if it wasn't for the fact that this is the first book I've managed to finish in a good few months, I somehow managed to read it all this afternoon, and I care more about these characters than I probably have any right to after 130 or so pages. It's not exactly 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption' in terms of how much I felt in such a short space of time, but the reading experience was a hell of a lot better than 'Blockade Billy'. There was also a level of white male saviourism going on with this one as well but I couldn't really bring myself to care about that all that much by the end.

4 stars, it's a weird little story and nothing really gets explained with the weight situation, but sometimes that's for the best.

Edit: I've just looked at the cover for the novel and it actually makes sense now lol, could not work it out initially.

Week later edit: it's down to a 3 star, like I said nothing mind blowing but it was what I needed. But it feels super wrong giving it the same star rating as 'Never Let Me Go'.

Weird book, a quick read. Interesting characters but there’s not much more there

Not the usually horror but still good..gave me some thinner vibes.

Cute little story. I expected a horror story to be honest, but it was a really nice story.

This was going to be the last book of 2018, but I only managed half of it in time. King is a great storyteller, but I didn’t really understand what he was getting at here.

There’s a guy losing weight, without changing his body and without trying or understanding why. There is a neighborhood restaurant owned by lesbians that is set to close because of town boycott. There is a 12 km run and the winner gets to light the town Christmas tree.

Maybe I’m just too tired since I’ve been driving 1100 km in 48 hours, or maybe this simply wasn’t my cup of tea.
