I am absolutely shell-shocked. First of all, I'm amazed about all the theories that were correct, but also so far off from the truth. The overall theme of power and the things we do for it is insane. We see Xaden become a venin to save Violet at the end of the book, apparently prophesied by the Sage, who is actually a general of the venin, that we would turn for the one he loves. Andarna is the seventh breed of dragon who waited to hatch for 650 years but did so after learning of Violet's existence on Violet's eighteenth birthday. Jack Barlowe is indeed alive and still fucking sucks! I just can't believe how much the thirst for power has affected all the characters' choices and the paths they went down. I don't know when the third book comes out, but I'm so worried that they all won't come back in the end.

I'm just reviewing the book.

What was that writing??? What was that ending???

This book felt unfinished.

Fourth wing, for me, was not an extremely good book but it was engaging, enjoyable and fast-paced. I actually cared for the characters and wanted to know what would happen next

But this one, even if I cared, it felt wrong, some scenes felt like they could be cut an others just felt incomplete, especially the last chapters. I don´t know if it's because they wanted to publish the book as fast as they could but it definitely felt like the author was just giving us the information she wanted to include in this sequel and nothing more. Some chapters were just like: "this characters dies, next scene, this secret is out, next scene, this happens, next scene", like we didn´t get the full chapters or plot points she wanted to develop in the first place. AND also there were so many plot twists in this book that even the characters couldn´t take them, she literally included everything in this book and therefore everything felt insufficient.

Also the writing style could use some revision, i know they were planning to publish it next year and my question is why did the author, editor and publisher couldn't wait until then? They could've fixed some errors and maybe actually develop some ideas.

-spoilers-

Lastly, the scenes where Xaden and Violet are intimate just felt unnecessary when war and so much plot twists were happening, don't even get me started on the throne scene, what was that Xaden?? are u okay?? And the continuous interrumptions on their fights were infurating, but I guess the author was aware of that because even Violet was frustrated at some point, but also felt like she was trying to keep the "Xaden lies and is so secretive" storyline but it was just tiring after all of those chapters when he was "trying to get Violet back".

Would I probably read the next one? Yes, just for the dragons, signets and Xaden. Do I wish they publish it in two years so they can actually work on it so it is not as unfinished as this one? Yep.

this is an absolute trainwreck of a book that i barely got through. it has terrible writing, an awfully bloated cast (the only thing worse than when the mc has to TELL you she's not going to bother learning some of the newcomer's names is when those names become relevant later on.), a magic system that doesn't have a real idea of what it wants to be (
wielding sheer power? siphoning? second signets for both mcs? is this some elementary school kid's fever dream of heroes who are just almighty beings? i literally still cannot tell you what imbuing is and why earthen magic or runes are suddenly relevant, or how they relate.
), and all of the parts of the plot that should've been emotionally charged fell completely flat.

additionally - this pairing was already pretty unconvincing from b1 but w the sheer stupidity of the repeated arguments about the same thing + the ~twist~ that casts doubt on everything built up in 4w + the sheer stupidity of the "feminism-honoring" ex-gf storyline the series has really just built itself up to be a terrible vessel for a very half-baked plot and characters.

It was like being on an acid trip the entire time LMAO.

An amazing read from start to finish, and I love this book even more than I did the first. You grow so emotionally attached to all the characters (the author is incredibly talented in her ability to do this!!), only to be gutwrenchingly heartbroken at the very end. Looking forward to book 3!!!
