A fun read, which is all Scalzi was trying for. Indeed, he explains that he wrote it while stalled on a heavier one.

Per the unwritten rules, Scalzi builds a ridiculous premise but then sticks firmly to the rules he made up. There's team banter, heroism, snark, action, comeuppance, and more. The hero is credible.

Read quickly and don't ask too many questions. It's fun.

I’m calling this one. I got halfway and that’s good enough for me. I suffered long enough. It was recommended as a ‘fun sci-fi without being as technical and deep and Crichton or Clancy’. Turns out, I was wishing for some Crichton and I’m no academic- I just appreciate good writing.
And, yes, I read the author’s note at the back stating he had an illness that wasn’t Covid, but he still thought it was and his brain was somehow turned to pudding and he couldn’t write properly and yet his publishers were still demanding a book. Then, heavens, he wrote great things at the beginning of 2021 but January 6th happened. Ah, 1/6, the absolute worst, most bad, terrible, no good, awful thing old grannies have ever done to ‘Merica before and he couldn’t write anymore unstick TWO WEEKS after the inauguration of a new president (a man whose brain is actual tapioca).
Honestly, Scalzi isn’t for me. His dialogue is vapid and trite. The trope is old and boring. The woke boxes he ticked were as LOUD and PROUD and a drag queen parade. I did find an oopsie, though.
One character named Niamh (pronounced Neeve) is always referred to with they/them pronouns. Exhausting for an English major and teacher. However, in one exchange, Scalzi slips up and uses ‘she’! Maybe it’s an Easter egg?
