I‘m sorry. I think I‘m just not the targeted audience or since english is my fifth language there might be some language barriers there... also it is an older book and writing was different back there...

I read this short story as a child, and since then, I've reread it many a time; though now, upon reviewing, I think it deserves further study. I think the mind of a 20 year old can grasp more than that of a 12 year old.

There in laid the problem; on the one hand the writing style was brilliant, descriptive, emmersive and dream-like, taking the reader into the secluded setting of a spanish residence in the 19th century. Immediately one feels as secluded as the narrator, and the eeirie aura that surrounds the place.

But that whimsical, touch and go fleetingness, that tentative air, wasn't enough for my young mind, and I remember being confused by the subtelity of the end. Maybe I should read it again, because I think I'd appreciate how much this novella holds back much more. It's so much easier to just pour into writing. Holding back is... delicate. Special. Creates antecipation.

That I couldn't appreciate as a child. Let me read this again, and maybe I'll rate it different.

I think I would have enjoyed this better if the narrator wasn't such a snob. He really, really is a snob. One of those British long nosed, look down on everyone types. Quite frankly, Poe does this type of thing much better.
