Such a fun book! At first I wondered if Harry was too good to be true, but he really turned out to be a jem of a man. Ellie is smart and beautiful and his perfect partner. The romance was HOT. I look forward to book #3. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC. Opinions are my own.
Eleanor “Ellie” Law and her group of close friends have been solving crimes under the name Charles King for years, so when the mysterious Harry identifies himself as King to a potential client, they must find a way to work with him. Together Ellie and Harry begin solving crimes throughout the city relying heavily on Harry’s knowledge as proclaimed thief and con artist. As they spend time together the attraction grows and turns to love, though Harry’s past makes things complicated and become a task they too must solve together.
This book was like a breath of fresh air for me. The book is relatively short and so easy to read so it felt like I was flying through the story. I loved both Ellie and Harry from the start. I greatly appreciated that the book let the book let the reader in on Harry secret rather than dance around it until Ellie figures things out. The steamy scenes were wonderfully steamy and I really felt the connection between the two. As always Kate’s stories, the book was just so well thought out and didn’t feel like it was bogged down with random side plots or anything that didn’t move the main story forward. I really enjoyed the previous book in the series and am looking forward to seeing where the series goes with Daisy’s story.

Eleanor works with her two best friends as part of a private investigation firm, led by a fictional boss, Mr. Charles King. When a dashing rogue, claiming the name of "Harry," kisses her at a party, then claims to be Mr. King in front of a potential client, her senses are on high alert, wondering what this mysterious man's sudden arrival in her life means. Ellie and her friends begrudgingly allow Harry to assist them, as his skills as a former thief may come in handy in their line of work. As they work together to solve cases, Ellie and Harry grow closer until a secret Harry is keeping threatens to ruin everything they've built.
Kate Bateman always succeeds in drawing me into her Regency world of intelligent women and handsome scoundrels. Harry was a bit of a departure from previous heroes, with his previous life as a thief putting him into more of a morally gray territory than the typical nobility. Ellie was an interesting character, growing up assisting her lawyer father, but unable to make a career of it on account of her gender. The romance between Ellie and Harry was cute, if not overly exciting, and their costumed escapades were one of the highlights of the story.

4 stars. DELIGHTFUL. I’ve been looking forward to Ellie’s story ever since I read the first book in the series last year, and I’m so thrilled about this.
TLDR: Ellie Law meets a mysterious man at a ball, and he pretends to be THE Charles King (the fake man they’ve put at the front of King Esq so that no one questions three female investigators etc) to get her out of a jam. They reluctantly team up to solve a crime involving a lucky jewel-covered book of Napoleon’s that’s been stolen. WHOOPS THEY FALL IN LOVE HEHEHEHE. Also dude is a secret LOST EARL who fled the country with his uncle/guardian at 15 and is now back to claim his title/prove his identity?! DELICIOUS. Ellie falls in love with him before the chaotic reveal and angst ensues for a hot second.
This book is soooooo sexy. 10/10. I had a great time. Can’t wait for more of this fun, funny, smart series!

Glasses wearing bluestocking wallflower stole my heart! Ellie and Harry are so cute together- I love their banter, stolen kisses, partnership and finally getting their HEA. Harry is that charming mystery man but turns into so much more with understanding and love for Ellie. Like we get the side characters of her friends and then his uncle. Enjoyed the crime solving plot and then the ending melted my heart!
I love Kate’s series and this one is no different. Enjoy this investigation firm - solving crimes for all sets of people in London. Love the strong female bond and friendship with these leading ladies. Then leading men that fall hard for their ladies. Can’t wait for Daisy to get her HEA!

medium-paced
Happy sigh. This is another excellent entry in the series. If you like witty banter, smart heroines, heists, funny best friends - this is the book for you. The story was a great ride, and very funny. Ellie is a lawman's daughter, enjoying independence and running her detective agency with her friends. Harry (or is it?) is a charming rogue who sweeps into her life to apply for a job at the agency. She is delightfully annoyed with his flippant ways, and we never know how far she can trust him. This book was such a quick read, so funny and engaging. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

This is the second book in Her Majesty’s Rebels series and I enjoyed this lighthearted historical. It’s got a few mysteries, lady private detectives and a spicy romance.
Eleanor (Ellie) and her two friends run a private investigation firm. Ellie is at a ball when a handsome stranger introduces himself as the name they use for their fictional boss (Charles King) and offers to help them with their detective work. Harry is charming and admits to being a thief in the past but he has turned over a new leaf. Ellie doesn’t trust him but he will come in handy as they search for a rare book.
The biggest mystery for them to uncover is proof of Harry’s identity. It’s fun to watch Ellie and Harry as they go undercover and work together to solve mysteries. The pacing slows down when they gaze into each other’s eyes and there are quite a few steamy scenes.
My favorite parts were when Harry uses his con artist skills to help them with their investigations. This is my first book by this author and I thought it stood well alone (even though it’s the second book in the series). Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

Is there much more exquisite than a finely-written, banter-y historical romance? Not much, imo.
@kc_bateman is an expert at writing these. Did I swoon? Only every time Harry flashed those delectable dimples. Only every time Ellie realized she is just as desirable as Harry is.
What a gorgeous, fun, sexy caper! You should 100% add this to your TBR. Join Ellie, Harry and the rest of Her Majesty’s Rebels as they solve crime and sort out secret identities.
Visit illicit gaming hells in disguise. Meet up with double-crossing crooks. Make out (in Italian!) a hairs-breadth from your mark.
Oh man! This has been a journey. I couldn’t put this book down. I had so much I needed to do after work, but how could I when Ellie and Harry were calling my name? These two are going in my top favorite couples. I ADORE them.
I received an arc in exchange for a review. All thoughts are my own.

I really liked the first novel in Bateman's new series and the second one continues the frothy fun of three ladies running a detective agency, solving crimes, and falling in love. I thought the timing of different reveals was interesting in this book, revealing a few choice spoilers earlier than I would have thought, but it was nice to see the characters just move on and keep up the detective work. It felt like things were low stakes because everything resolved easily, but Harry and Ellie are fun and Harry is such a rogue. It was great.
